Reviews & Essays on Poetry, English, Paperback, 127x203mm

Vapour Trails is a very readable survey of modern poetry, gathering reviews commissioned by the TLS and other journals, and featuring several new essays. The first half guides us through ‘Varieties of Englishness’ from the era of Edward Thomas and Eleanor Farjeon to our own time, with pieces on Anne Stevenson, Mimi Khalvati, John Agard, Helen Dunmore, Michael Donaghy and Simon Armitage, among others. There are discussions of poets from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and America, with a stopover in Iceland, and a selection of more personal work including the title essay about one particular county’s literary associations. John Greening has published over twenty collections of poetry and many critical studies. His writings have been warmly praised by Helen Vendler, and The London Magazine called him ‘possibly an even better critic than poet’. On learning that Vapour Trails was to be published, the late Dennis O’Driscoll wrote that it would be an ‘indispensable and authoritative record of contemporary poetry’.

‘Since the end of the 1970s, John Greening has steadily established himself a significant presence in contemporary English poetry.’ – Glyn Pursglove, Acumen

‘Lively, authoritative and wide-ranging … As a regular and long-standing reviewer of poetry, John Greening is a reliable guide’ – Victoria Field, Writing in Education (on Poetry Masterclass, 2011)
