A Night of Islands owes its existence to John Killick, poet, ex-publisher and editor, who approached Martin in the summer of 2015 and offered to edit a selection of his poems and seek a publisher for the book. Most of the poems in the selection were taken from Martin’s first two collections, The Larch Plantation (1990) and The Song of the Quern (1998), with the remainder from his collaboration with the Scottish artist Mark I’Anson, Always Boats and Men (2010), and from the five poetry booklets Martin published privately between 2005 and 2011.  The book was designed by Gerry Cambridge, poet and editor of The Dark Horse literary magazine, with a front cover seascape based on an image by Campbeltown photographer and naturalist, James MacDonald.  The book’s contents have been arranged in four thematic sections: ‘Sea’, ‘Land’, ‘Ancestors & Others’ and ‘A Kintyre Nature Diary’.
