Edited by Michael Payne

Poems by Joan Downar (1930–1996) appeared in many leading journals, including Encounter, New Statesman, Sunday Times and Poetry Review.

In 1982 she was the winner at the Stroud International Poetry Competition. Her prize-winning entry ‘House Martins’ was described as ‘…typical of this undervalued poet’s precise original evocations of place and people and the way memory works.’

Two collections followed, The Empire of Light (1984), and The Old Noise of Truth (1989), both published by Peterloo Poets.

‘…Her art is not concerned with drawing attention to itself, yet her wry indirection demonstrates her seriousness as a poet.’ Times Literary Supplement

‘…Joan Downar moves smoothly from one image to the next, almost as if she were telling a story.’ Poetry Review

At her death in 1996 she had accumulated a large number of as yet unpublished poems from which the present collection has been made.

London Grip’s poetry editor, Michael Bartholomew-Biggs, takes a look at its frank and largely autobiographical contents.
