Ian Caws was for 25 years a social worker in West Sussex and ran the county’s service for deaf people.  The title poem examines the night admission of a man to psychiatric hospital.

Life on the Sussex Downs and by the English Channel are portrayed with discernment and insight.  A former recipient of the Eric Gregory Award, Ian Caws has published 12 collections, one of which, The Ragman Totts, was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.

“Gradually one becomes aware of the considerable technical skill… the poet’s sure control of his syllabic stanza forms, his unobtrusive use of rhyme, the absence of superfluous embroidery.” – Wendy Cope, Times Literary Supplement
