George Gömöri

George Gömöri was born in Hungary in 1934. Having taken an active part in the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, he was forced to leave his homeland. After finishing his studies at Oxford, he taught Polish and Hungarian at the University of Cambridge for over thirty years.
Apart from his other publications, twelve books of his poems have been published in Hungarian and several in English, including My Manifold City (Alba Press, 1996), translated by Clive Wilmer. His poetry has won international awards both in Hungary and in Italy. As well as the selection of poems, Polishing October, he and Wilmer have translated work by numerous other Hungarian poets.
