Ernest Renan

Ernest Renan gained fame and notoriety with his biography of Jesus as a historical figure rather than as a supernatural deity. This made him a champion for free-thinkers and a heretic to the devout. He extended his radical religious ideas in this philosophical drama, published in 1886. At the same time Le Prêtre de Nemi was published the temple of the goddess Diana at Nemi was rediscovered and excavated. Renan’s neglected play also exerted a profound influence on The Golden Bough; James Frazer’s monumental study of magic and religion.
